According to the article, ethanol subsidies are good for farmers and farm-state politicians as well as others whose ideological postions are closely tied with promoting these ideas (Nancy Pelosi), but not so good for starving people around the world. Ethanol doesn’t seem to be as energy efficient as gasoline either.
One fault line upon which most libertarians and conservatives differ from democrats seems to be that of free market activity. Libertarians and conservatives are willing to defend the often counter intuitive principles found therein.
